Yiska's Approach to Acupuncture
Yiska is a compassionate listener and and intuitive practitioner who encourages clients to connect with their bodies & emotions, finding the connection between heart, mind, & body through embodied awareness & experience. Her approach engages people in all aspects of their being, body, mind and spirit. She works together with her clients to create the kind of lifestyle shifts that will improve their quality of life, approaching symptoms as invaluable teachers, messengers of the body’s innate wisdom, believing that the power to heal lies within each of us.
Five element acupuncture specifically uses the 5 elements (wood, fire, earth, metal & water) as a diagnostic lens with which to understand the nature of energy in each client. This lens in turn is used in treatment planning as Yiska works with each client to determine how best to nurture and preserve that individual’s dynamic balance of energy for optimum health and personal growth.
For pregnant women specifically, acupuncture can be used throughout pregnancy for support on any level. Acupuncture also helps prepare a woman's body for birth as her estimated due date approaches. Acupuncture is becoming more and more well known as a natural induction method for encouraging labor and optimizing readiness for birth by easing the nerves of expectant mothers and stimulating blood flow to her uterus and pelvis. Moxibustion (a method of applying herbal heat to acupuncture points) in particular is often helpful for turning breech babies as well.
Finally, Yiska's approach to massage therapy, prenatally and otherwise, is equally therapeutic & nurturing. She works deeply applying mixed modalities drawing from deep tissue massage, rolfing, & thai bodywork techniques for a deeply restorative treatment that will leave you feeling lighter, longer & more grounded and connected to yourself. Expect deep work! Private and group classes for couples to learn how to massage each other are also available.
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is an ancient Oriental healing modality with far reaching applications for modern living. It is an energy based medicine asserting that dis-ease originates in blockages obstructing the free and natural movement of energy in our being.
Acupuncturists work with fine, solid, sterilized needles to stimulate various points along energy pathways in the body that nourish and move energy, thereby removing obstructions and stimulating our body’s natural ability to heal.

What can I expect a session to look like?
Your first session will last approximately 1.5-2 hours. This session includes a full consultation, Chinese physical exam and your first needle treatment. During your consultation we will spend time discussing your personal and medical history, current health concerns and your goals for treatment. Follow up sessions last approximately 1 hour. It is recommended that new patients schedule 6-8 consecutive weekly follow-up sessions at the beginning to insure maximum benefit and before deciding how much acupuncture treatment can help them.
Do the needles hurt?
It is important to know that an acupuncture needle is roughly the thickness of 2 human hairs, very different than the hollow needles used for taking blood for instance. While you definitely want to feel something when the needles are inserted, I do not associate acupuncture treatment with pain. You may experience a tingling or electric sensation, a tugging feeling or even a quick pinch. All sensations are fleeting and indicate that the “qi” (vital energy) has been stimulated and your healing process is under way.
